History of Excavations
In the winter of 1778 Gavin Hamilton visited Villamagna, where there were some magnificent ruins. However, he claims that the site had already been excavated and left for Ostia. During the nineteenth century there were at least two further excavations, undertaken with the permission of the cathedral, to which the property belonged, but they are reported to have failed to uncover the hoped-for statues.
