Villa Magna

We opened a third trench this week and have managed to get about half way through excavating it, despite hoping to try and get it completed. The aim of this trench was to try, once again to try to establish the northern limit of this part of the villa complex. We hoped that this may be a straightforward task, envisaging a wall running parallel to the wall of the granaio, forming the edge of the terrace. However this was not to be the case. We spent – once again – a lot of time picking and shovelling through topsoil and working our way through modern stratigraphy. We identified first of all the continuation of the wall excavated further up the hill in G2 continuing in a northerly direction. Towards the end of the week we then identified two further walls abutting this wall running, incomprehensibly diagonally to the north east and south west
