Area A4, 16-22th June 2008

During this week we started excavating the several cuts identified in the previous week, working again from W to E. On closer examination, the cuts tended to multiply, forming groups of 2 or 3. Apparently, the same areas have been cut into several times on different occasions, often presenting situations that have been challenging to interpret. Under several of these intrusions we have encountered clay layers that can be compared to construction materials from other parts of the casale area. The large cut 7022 in the NW corner of the trench proved to be quite deep, in its turn cut by other intrusions, and will need further investigation. It aligns with the cut 7008 in wall 7006 in the NW corner of the trench, and we have interpreted it as being equal to it. We cleared the rubble layer 7005 from the N room of the trench, and cleaned the area, finding a multitude of intrusions in this area as well, including a long narrow cut running underneath the yellow clay layer 7062 from NE to SW, probably for a pipe. The W-most part of the trench is now entirely dug, documented and drawn. Next week, we will move to the E to clarify the situation to S of the other large cut in wall 7006, where a number of intrusions have been identified.
