Monte S. Giuliano, September 2007, 7 Photos
These are images of our walk up Monte S. Giuliano, where we attempted to identify the site named in a number of documents from the monastery of S. Pietro in Villamagna. It seems that the monastery created a new settlement ("castrum") up on this hill, with housing plots for dozens of men. According to Pierre Toubert, this is a straightforward case of incastellamento. We visited the site in September 2007, climbing to the top of the mountain behind Villa Magna. An article by E. Molteni, "La chiesa di S. Secondina di Monte Giuliano ed il suo contesto storico topografico," Latium, Rivista di studi storici 20 (2003), pp. 115-130 has attempted to identify some of the remains as a church of S. Secundina, also named in the sources.
